They keep the residents in their rooms when sickness is going around and that's fine but a month is a little long for them to be confined to their rooms. They also do not like if you visit often and it makes me wonder why, can't help but think they are not as they appear. Our summer volunteers spend one week building cinderblock homes for families in desperate need of a stable house. Volunteers spend the entire week working alongside the families receiving the homes. It takes about 7 to 10 days to build a house for a family. Normally the volunteers help with the construction of the house from day one. The completion of the house and the subsequent ceremonial key handover to the family is for most volunteers a very emotional experience and a very special moment.

Being American isn’t about what we give tangibly or intangibly; it’s about what we have the privilege to share. Being America isn’t about bequeathing our values to an underprivileged, ‘backwards’ culture. It’s about sharing something sweet and something powerful. I hope I didn't completely change the pictured boy's life.

My prayer is this trip only leads to more trips back to serve the people of Guatemala. Also, they would have a real door and some safety from wild animals and protection from the rain. This one-roomed house would be a major difference to them. Finally, the father and mother thanked us and Joe Collins put up a plaque with our names on it, and set it up beside the door, proudly displaying our names. Normally where they would sleep was now taken over by the concrete packages which had to be kept dry.

It was back in 2009 when the rescue and custody center for wild animals in Bolivia was founded as an NGO. A Swiss animal lover created this wonderful animal welfare project on a 45 hectar protected nature reserve in the middle of a very varied tropical landscape. Wild animals find ideal conditions for a secure life in the primeval forests, swamps and savannahs. The nature reserve has extensive, species-appropriate animal facilities, where the freed wild animals have a second chance for a better life.

I looked into those young children’s eyes and the mom so concerned for her little ones and the tears in my young friend’s eye and I knew the whisper was real. Join From Houses to Homes as they offer volunteers the chance to build homes for poor citizens in Guatemala. By the end of the week, it felt like time had gone by in a matter of hours. I had already been there for almost a week, but it felt much less. The last day was Friday, and since we were nearly finished we thought we would have a party in honor of the family. We brought balloons and a piñata filled with all kinds of candy. Like my grandparents, cousin, and I walked in we were greeted by the founder, Joe Collins.

There were actually two pieces of property on the sale. One is the sqft lakefront plot where the house is, and the new room is being built. This plot is for us to live on and where I plan on starting a small guest house next year. A Message to American Ambassadors to el Extranjero

An important part of our volunteer works in Guatemala is always an intense experience of the everyday life and culture of the host country. Therefore, our volunteers in Antigua live in homestays, so that they dive directly into local customs, taste typical meals, and experience the life of a family in Guatemala. Besides, you will quickly realize how your Spanish skills improve each day. Volunteers who enjoy helping out and not shying away from physical work can help in a construction project in Antigua. The aim of this project is to build new homes for families living in extreme poverty or to improve and expand existing homes.

Building a house without a concrete mixer, heavy excavation equipment, proper tools or even gloves is a job that is not for the faint of heart. Most men living in the rural villages would claim that they have “construction experience.” So now, do I. A typical house is made of cornstalk walls, a dirt floor and a scrap material roof. This volunteer project takes place on the amzing Easter Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I hope we don’t shop this week, and I’ll post my shop this weekend. It often takes multiple generations for a family in the communities to save up for a new home, our teams build homes to rescue and renew the hope of families. Cinderblock homes are the foundational projects of Hope’s In.

I’m excited to see what God does with this special group of 20. It’s no accident that God whispered, “build a house! ” He wants YOU to be a part whether you are going or donating. For those who help updates will take place as we build.

We began work pretty soon, and we also found out that a number of workers already started on Friday to lay the groundwork and measure.
