Join From Houses to Homes as they offer volunteers the chance to build homes for poor citizens in Guatemala. By the end of the week, it felt like time had gone by in a matter of hours. I had already been there for almost a week, but it felt much less. The last day was Friday, and since we were nearly finished we thought we would have a party in honor of the family. We brought balloons and a piñata filled with all kinds of candy. Like my grandparents, cousin, and I walked in we were greeted by the founder, Joe Collins.

Our summer volunteers spend one week building cinderblock homes for families in desperate need of a stable house. Volunteers spend the entire week working alongside the families receiving the homes. It takes about 7 to 10 days to build a house for a family. Normally the volunteers help with the construction of the house from day one. The completion of the house and the subsequent ceremonial key handover to the family is for most volunteers a very emotional experience and a very special moment.

Most of the big spending is going into the new building, but DIY goes a really long way with very little. Quite reasonable to make a house liveable, start building a new room and live for two months. I didn’t think I could make a difference among this much poverty.

There were actually two pieces of property on the sale. One is the sqft lakefront plot where the house is, and the new room is being built. This plot is for us to live on and where I plan on starting a small guest house next year. The other piece of property is a 90 acres land that is on the other side of the road, about 200 yards from the shore of the lake.

A Message to American Ambassadors to el Extranjero

An important part of our volunteer works in Guatemala is always an intense experience of the everyday life and culture of the host country. Therefore, our volunteers in Antigua live in homestays, so that they dive directly into local customs, taste typical meals, and experience the life of a family in Guatemala. Besides, you will quickly realize how your Spanish skills improve each day. Volunteers who enjoy helping out and not shying away from physical work can help in a construction project in Antigua. The aim of this project is to build new homes for families living in extreme poverty or to improve and expand existing homes.

Building a house without a concrete mixer, heavy excavation equipment, proper tools or even gloves is a job that is not for the faint of heart. Most men living in the rural villages would claim that they have “construction experience.” So now, do I. A typical house is made of cornstalk walls, a dirt floor and a scrap material roof. This volunteer project takes place on the amzing Easter Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I hope we don’t shop this week, and I’ll post my shop this weekend. It often takes multiple generations for a family in the communities to save up for a new home, our teams build homes to rescue and renew the hope of families. Cinderblock homes are the foundational projects of Hope’s In.

I was put on wire duty, in which I had to cut steel rebar to secure the concrete. After many turns and cutbacks, we had reached the current home of the Mixtun family. The road leading up to it was a dirt road, and surrounding it lay rows and rows of corn in which you could almost get lost in.
